The core of the exhibition is the area called “L’ESPERIENZA DEL TERREMOTO” (the earthquake experience), where, thanks to two big vibrating tables reproducing the seismic shaking, the visitor can understand what an earthquake is through the sensorial perception of its effects on people and objects. The two tables have been realized by the Italian Department of Civil Protection in collaboration with the University of Basilicata and the Centre of Competence ReLUIS (Network of the University Laboratories of Earthquake Engineering). Standing on the first table -the “Seismic Platform”-, that reproduces a domestic setting in real size, visitors can personally experience an earthquake. On the second table -the “Seismic City”-, a urban setting with buildings and bridges with different seismic protection systems is reproduced to a reduced scale, so that the visitors can perceive from the outside the earthquake experience.
